5 Tips for a Stylish Yard

  • Feb 27, 2009
  • Post a comment

Your yard is the first thing people see when they come to your home.  Don’t you want it to look trendy and give your guests a good first impression?  The following are some tips for making your landscaping and yard look stylish and up-to-date.  First of all, we know that being environmentally friendly is very fashionable these days.   Therefore you should keep this in mind whenever you are planning new landscape or caring for existing landscape.  Avoid cutting down healthy trees unnecessarily.  Trees will help to shade your yard and home, making it cooler in the summertime and reducing the need to run your air conditioning.  Many of the commercial plants that are popular today are non-native species.  Non-native species require a lot of extra care including special soil, irrigation, and pesticides and fertilizers to thrive.  It is possible to have a gorgeously landscaped yard and to only use native plant species to achieve this.  Native plants are lower maintenance and don’t require the use of man-made fertilizers and pesticides which pollute the soil and water supply.  Whenever possible, use native plant species over foreign ones.

Another recent trend is to include water features in landscaping.  While it’s stylish to have a fountain or pond in your yard, people are still keeping the environment in mind and the styles today are much smaller than the ones of the past.  People are also opting to add functional water features such as an outdoor shower if they have a swimming pool.  With the right tiles and design, an outdoor shower can be useful as well as an attractive addition to your yard.
A third trend is gardening.  More and more people are making space in their yards for a vegetable garden.  Many people feel that food is safer when they grow it themselves and it will save you money on your grocery bills.  Some people are choosing to plant vegetables that have colorful, attractive plants so they can be a source of both food and beauty.

A fourth hot idea is to bring your living room outside.  We don’t mean this literally but more and more people are spending more of their time outside in their yards relaxing.  People view their yards as an extension of their houses.  Companies are responding to the demand with increasing numbers of products that can withstand the rigors of the great outdoors.  Furniture, fireplaces and even televisions are trendy new items for your patio that will make you feel as comfortable on your patio as you are in your living room while allowing you to enjoy the fresh air and outdoors.
Fifth, more and more people are including summer kitchens in their backyards.  This goes way beyond your standard little backyard barbecue grill.  People are building space for elaborate grills, refrigerators and icemakers and then concealing these appliances with cabinetry.  With a little creativity and planning you can follow some or all of these suggestions and create a yard for your home that is functional and stylish and won’t negatively impact the environment.

HOW TO ATTRACT PROSPERITY IN YOUR HOME

HOW TO ATTRACT PROSPERITY IN YOUR HOME

The Home is Your Mirror

It is a common belief that the manner how you arrange your home depicts what kind of a person you are.  It’s just like saying that the home is the mirror of your personality.  Whatever you put in your home and how you arrange your home exudes the kind of your personality to other people.  If you just leave things behind instead of keeping them after use and you don’t arrange them properly, it creates a bad impression on your character.

If you are fond of clutters, it merely describes your being disorganized.  If your home is filled with a lot of objects and graphics on sex, you may be exhibiting a great passion for sex not unless you are an artist.

Psychologists reveal that most of psychological disorders emanate from the 4 corners of the home.  If the house is filled with joy, there is tendency for the members to have solidarity, while on the opposite side a member of the family can go wayward psychologically.

When you enter a home with several religious images and oversize statues, you would normally think that the owners are spiritually inclined.  Same is true with a home which has different kinds of musical instruments and objects.  Visitors will assume that the occupants are music lovers and maybe one of the members is a musician.

The Art of Feng Shui

But what if a home is filled with weird objects starting from the entrance up to the exit, that according to the owners are symbols of prosperity?  Then, the home owners are Feng Shui enthusiasts.  They are believers of this Chinese art of arranging the interior and exterior of the house to attract wealth and prosperity.

You will see some colorful lucky charms nicely arranged in the area signifying their intent to draw positive energy and discard the negative one.  Even the arrangement of the home has a strong inclination to this oriental belief that has a long historical records dating back thousands of years ago in mainland China.

They believe that the frontal direction of homes must be identical to the dates of birth of the couple.  Feng Shui has a great emphasis on the manner of how to arrange the furniture.  Believers never place a cooking stove in front of a water tap because they say that the energies of both objects are clashing with each other being fire and water.

Is it a Myth or an Art?

They also believe that the more circular objects are placed inside the home, the more money and prosperity will flow in.  That is why it is recommended that the dining and receiving tables must be round or oval.  They also believe that big mirrors installed either inside or outside facing a door deflects the positive energy that comes in to the house.

More emphasis is given to 2 doors facing each other.  They believe that if this is the case, there will be a competition between the occupants of the rooms.  But many people dismiss the principles involved in the arrangement of homes based on this art and merely regard it as a myth or superstition.

Whatever is the principle that makes up this kind of home arrangement, the best element to draw prosperity in the home is thru family solidarity.  But of course, arrange your home nicely that attracts your own eyes.

Where did the word Canuck Come From?

Where did the word "Canuck" Come From?

Today, we will look at the fun fact Canuck. You may have come across the word “Canuck” and wondered where the word have come from.  Perhaps you have heard it used in a hockey team’s name or through a lighthearted person in a bar who says, “Oh, a Canuck!” when referring to someone from Canada.

It makes you wonder where exactly the word “Canuck” had come from, and how it had come to describe a Candian.
The use of the term Canuck was first documented in the year 1835, with a meaning referring to French Canadians specifically.  But as time passed, the use of the term Canuck became more widespread, and it was used to refer to Canadians in general.

There are many theories as to the origins of the word “Canuck”.  Some experts believe that the term “Canuck” originated from the name “Canada” plus the Algonquian noun suffix, “uc”.  Others also believe that it probably came from the Iroquoian canuchsa, which is someone who lives in a kanata or village.

Other theories also state that it could have originated from the Hawaiian man or “kanaka,” and was borrowed by the French, thus coming out as “canaque,” a term that could have been initially used to describe French Canadian canoe men.

There are also others who believe that Canuck came from the word “Connaught,” a term supposed to be given by the French-Canadians to the Irish.

Today the word “Canuck” is used by Canadians as a merely descriptive of affectionate term for their nationality.  Although this is the case for Canadians, they could take offense when people from other nations use this term to refer to them.  Other Canadians could take it as a derogatory remark and be insulted for being called a “Canuck.”

There are also some Canadians who do not get insulted when referred to as a “Canuck.”  In fact during the World War II, Canadian soldiers began calling one another “Johnny Canuck,” which was the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. “G.I. Joe.”  Also, the term Canuck is even used in a hockey team name, The Vancouver Canucks.

But still, it is best to exercise caution when using the term “Canuck” to refer to a Canadian.  While it could be okay for a Canadian to call a fellow Canadian a “Canuck,” it might not be okay when someone from another nationality uses this term liberally.

There are many variations and theories when it comes to the etymology of the word “Canuck.”  If this question really interests you, it is best to do your homework and research on where indeed the word Canuck came from.

Fun facts about Duck Bill

  • Feb 1, 2009
  • Post a comment

Ever heard of the Duck Bill Beaver Tail, if not then these fun facts will get you started.

One of the most interesting animals to ever exist is the duck-billed platypus. Why the term duck-billed is included in the name is a mystery since this animal is the only one of its kind in present existence. There were once other creatures like it (examples have been found in the fossil record,) but there is nothing else like it on Earth right now. But what are the animal’s unique features, and what can we learn from it?

The duck bill is thought to be an adaptation which allows the animal to locate food. The platypus can emit electrical waves from its fur and the proboscis contains sensors. The platypus can be thought of as a bat. When the platypus is swimming it closes it’s eyes, ears and nostrils. Therefore it has no normal sensory way to locate food. However, since it has a mean of electrolocation it can pen point food much like a bat does when flying through the air. Both animals send out waves (the bat’s are sound waves) which bounce off of prey and back again to sensory organs. As the animal gets closer to its target it can “see” the target and capture it with great accuracy.

The tail of the platypus is used as a rudder, much like that of a beaver, but it is also a fat deposit for winter food stores. As the platypus feeds during the plentiful seasons, fat is stored in the tail. Then as the prey becomes harder to obtain its body can sustain itself with the addition of the stored fat.

The platypus fur is much like that of a sea otter. The fur is very dense and allows a dry layer of air to be captured between fur and skin. This dry layer insulates the animal and allows it to remain warm even during the winter.

A platypus is usually shy and wary, but it does have defenses. On its hind feet the platypus has a spur (much like that of a rooster) on its hind foot which delivers venom when it is provoked. The venom which is delivered is enough to cause humans severe pain, but not death. The spur is thought to have been developed because of the harsh environment that the platypus lives in. Tasmania and Eastern Australia are famous for vicious predators which would love to lunch on a soft platypus. But they realize they have to watch out for that hind foot.

Another interesting feature is that it is an egg-laying mammal. One of the main characteristics of mammals is that they bear live young. But not the platypus. Why should this animal have any feature that could be classified as normal?

A few final facts. When it is in the water it uses its front, webbed feet for propulsion. When it decides to leave the water, the webs recede and it walks on its toe nails for traction. It feeds on shrimp, larvae, flies and other small aquatic creatures. Unlike anything else, this is truly one for the books.

Dolphin Fun Facts

Dolphins are marvellous animals and here we present some top fun facts about them.

1. Dolphins are mammals; they feed their young with milk from the mother and also nurse them from mammary glands.

2. They are able to swim up to 260 m beneath the surface of the sea, although they are principally shallow divers and they stay close to the surface.

3. It is interesting to note that dolphins can stay up to only 15 minutes under water but they generally stay only a few minutes diving before they approach upwards for breathing.

4. Dolphins apply an interesting technique known as echolocation to look for food and navigate.

5. Unlike other sea creatures dolphins are social beings which live in groups and collaborate with one another for activities like acquiring food and calf rising.

6. In total there are 32 species of ocean dolphins and 5 species of river dolphins.

7. The biggest dolphin known to us is the "killer whale" (orca), which may mature up to 6.1 meters.

8. The most popular dolphin is the "bottlenose dolphin" which can develop to 2.5-2.8 meters.

9. According to biologists dolphins are warm-blooded and their interior temperature is approximately 36 degrees. To preserve this temperature they remain surrounded by a heavy layer of fat known as "blubber" just under the skin.

10. The ordinary botllenose dolphin brain weighs 1500-1600 grams, while average human brain weighs 1200-1300 grs. According to scientists this is not a decisive evidence of dolphin intelligence as numerous other agents might be the cause of intelligence .

11. Dolphins usually make a unique signature whistle that help respective dolphins distinguish each other or execute some other sort of communication still mystified to humans.

12. Bottlenose dolphins generally swim 5 to 12 kilometers per 60 minutes, although they can achieve up to 32 km/h.

You have obviously overlooked something

We tend to lose things. Some people lose there keys so much that a little beeper has been invented just to remind you where they are. The same for a remote control. You see people calling their own cell phones all of the time to locate them. There is the classic leaving your glasses on top of your head and forgetting that they are there. Some people lose their minds. Unfortunately for many this is literal with conditions such as Alzheimer’s. But we won’t get quite that heavy in this article.

What is the process by which we forget where we placed something? Some would wish that we were all equipped with a built in GPS receiver that could locate whatever was lost. Unfortunately, we are not. The process of loss is, generally, as simple as distraction. We forget where it is (whatever it happens to be) because someone called us on the phone. Or, we saw something that dominated our attention. The short term memory is a funny thing we can only hold a very few objects in there at a time. Studies say anything from 3 to 9 objects, and these for just a few seconds. That is why if you are trying to remember a phone number (7 digits in the US; or 10 with an area code) we have to repeat it to ourselves over and over until we can write it down. Thank god for cell phones with the immediate ability to store them for us. For those computer geeks out there the short term memory operates somewhat like a computer’s cache. The properties are the same. It is readily accessible, much-used data. So, if you always put your keys in a certain place, you will most likely remember where they are.

How about tricks for extending the short term memory. It really does work to say a name or a number repeatedly. This will help you access the long term memory. Also association is an old trick people tend to use. You have just met Stan. You want to remember his name and what he does because you are going to be thrown together often in community situations. Stan works construction, so you think of the projects that are on-going in your own house and connect him (figuratively or literally) to these. Then remember that you have to stand to do most construction and the word stand reminds you of his name Stan. Kind of a far-fetched association, but it could work. Another memory enhancer has been used since ancient times. You have to imagine a place that you have been that is well and minutely remembered. Remember each part of the structure separately. Then when you have to memorize something (a speech, poem, grocery list) place each item in a different room. Basically, this is called compartmentalization.

Many tricks of memory work; you just have to remember to use them.

Raising Twins who are Always Busy

  • Jan 21, 2009

Having twins is a blessing. Even if you have children to are a year or two apart, they still are not twins. Twin babies are in a class of their own. For one thing, they were born at the same time, give or take a few seconds. That being said, twins are, and remain busy, from the day they are born. This means, parents of twins have to always find ways to keep them occupied.

Keeping twins occupied from birth, infant hood and toddler hood is a balancing act to say the least. Let’s see, from the time twins enter this world, they need hands on parents. Infant twins are busy sleeping, waking, crying, eating, looking at things around them and seem to never be still. But wait, the busyness of twins does not end there. It would seem that infant twins would not be too much work, but that would be incorrect. Let me tell you, having twins, girls or boys, require a lot of time and love. Once you are a parent of twins, life is never the same.

From here on out, you are their world and they are yours. Forget going out with friends for at least a year. It is up to you, the parents, to find ways to keep your twins healthy and happy. This means finding ways to entertain them. Ways in which I entertained my infant twins was by playing music and learning videos for them. I also played sang lullabies to them, walked around my home with them and took them on walks, in their stroller, when it was nice enough to take them outside.

Babies love rattles, and twins are no different. If you received rattles for a baby shower or any birth gifts, it is time to bring them out and let your twins play with them and you dangle them in from of each twin too. When you dangle the rattle in front of your twin, or twins, sing to them or tell them the colors of the rattle. It is never too early to begin teaching your twins colors, shapes, numbers, letters and anything else you can think of. Another great way to keep your twins busy and occupied is by placing them on their bellies. These days, there are the coolest baby gyms and playmats for infants. Many of these gyms and playmats have toys dangling from them, have mirrors on them, and play sounds to help stimulate their growing brains to.

Looking back at what I did with my twins is easy now. It would have been nice to have had someone, with twins, show me ways to keep my twins busy and less fussy. Another great idea for keeping twins busy is the infant bouncy seats. My twins each had one of these seats and they did keep them busy because of the toys that dangled from them as well.

Remember, your twins are going to become restless more times than not. That is why it is up to you to find ways to occupy them, day and night.

Fun facts about baby

I think most parents will agree that being a parent is a learning curve. It is about learning to look after somebody who is not able to take care for themselves. Most importantly, it also teaches you a lot about yourself. Here are a a couple of things you may not have identified about your new baby.

It is interesting to know that tears contain stress hormones, so we cry to release stress. No other creature does this except humans. Your baby can not cry tears for at least three weeks, some of the times not till they are 4 or 5 months old.

Just about all mothers carry their babies on their left side so that the baby's head is side by side to mother's heart. Hearing a mother's heartbeat comforts a baby. While inside the womb, the mother's heartbeat was the one constant sound a child heard. Thus hearing a mother's heartbeat reminds them of the womb; which is a place of refuge and safety for them.

Primitively people would chew their baby's food and then give it from their mouth to their baby's mouth. You'll be able to watch primates doing this act.

We instinctively sway our babies at a heartbeat pace. Again this is done for soothing them.

According to researches during first 6 months of living your baby can recognize more sounds than she will be capable of in later life. This helps them in a great way to adapt any human language. As the time goes by she will get 'tuned' to her native language.

Your baby uses a lot of sign languages when it is very young such as when she is full she will turn her head away. This can be taken as the origin of shaking one's head to state no. Contrasting human societies have dissimilar words to say 'no' but almost all human societies turn their head from side to side to state 'no'.

Another one is sticking out your tongue is counted rude and immature in most nations as this is the manner that babies decline food.

A newborn can just focus on one thing at a time. It can be seen in such a way that when a baby first begins breastfeeding she will have her eyes closed but as she learns to do more one thing a time she will start to open her eyes and give you a smile.

Babies are not born with kneecaps. They only develop it during the latter half of the 1st year.

Babies can become self-conscious earlier than you might imagine. Really young babies love looking at themselves in mirrors but they may not recognize who they're looking at. If you put some lipstick on your baby's nose and then show her reflection, it is not until around 15 months that she will feel her own nose when she sees it.

One important suggestion would is the more stimulating experiences you can give your baby, the more circuitry is built for enhanced learning in the later life. So keep stimulating!

Statistics say that children born in the month of May are on the average 200 grams heavier at birth than children born in any other time of the year.

Here we go with the fun facts about diamonds. The majority of diamonds that are mined are used for industrial purposes and not for jewelry.  They are used to cut, drill, polish and grind.  It was discovered that ancient Chinese in the late stone age used diamonds to polish axes used in ceremonial burials.  Diamonds are made up of carbon and are the hardest naturally-occurring mineral substance.  Due to their hardness, it is necessary to use other diamonds to shape the diamonds used in jewelry.  Diamonds also have the highest melting point of any natural substance.  In 2004, astronomers discovered a star that is made of diamond.  Eventually our own sun will turn into a diamond.  It is believed that the diamonds in the earth are from one to three million years old.  Diamonds form in the earth's crust under intense heat and pressure.  Volcanic eruptions push diamonds closer to the earth's surface.  The etymology of the word “diamond” traces back to a Greek word that means “unconquerable”.  The world's diamond standards are set by the Gemological Institute of America.  Diamonds are evaluated based on clarity, color, cut and carat.  It is believed that diamonds were first mined in India and then Brazil.

The de Beers diamond cartel controls somewhere between sixty and seventy-five percent of the diamond trade worldwide.  Diamond mining is an extremely labor-intensive process and only about one in every one million one carat diamonds is of high enough quality to be used as a gemstone.  Almost half of the world's diamonds come from Africa.  The first diamond engagement ring was given by the Archduke of Austria in 1477 according to records.  Blue and pink diamonds are the most rare and the most common are yellow and brown.  Traditional Hindus believe that a diamond with any type of flaw is bad luck.  There is one diamond mine in the world that's open to the public, located in Arkansas.  Visitors can pay a fee and then mine their own diamonds.  Out of the approximately 74,000 visitors each year, about one in one hundred finds a diamond.  The deepest hole on earth is a diamond mine in Russia.  Although diamonds are extremely hard, they are not unbreakable.  If you hit a diamond at the correct angle, it can easily break.  If you shine an ultraviolet light on a diamond, it will continue to glow even after the light source is removed.  This only occurs with natural diamonds and not man-made ones so this method is used to distinguish between the two.  Around thirty percent of all diamonds used in industry are man-made.

The largest diamond ever found was over three thousand carats.  It is estimated that more than ten million people worldwide gain their livelihood at least in part from the diamond industry.  In Botswana, diamond industry revenue provides children up to age thirteen with free education.  The movie, “Blood Diamond” brought the darker side of the diamond industry into the spotlight.  However, since 2003, blood diamonds, also called conflict diamonds, now account for only one percent of diamonds on the market.

A baby is born somewhere in the world every three seconds.  All babies are born with blue or bluish colored eyes but sometimes in only seconds after birth, their eyes will change color.  All babies are also born with a reddish complexion because they have a large number of red blood cells in their blood.  If a baby is born with hair on his head, it will fall out and be replaced by permanent hair within about six months.  A newborn baby's head is generally about a quarter of it's entire birth weight.  When a baby is born, it has a natural ability to swim and hold his breath.  However, this instinct rapidly fades.  Newborn babies' have a heart rate that is about twice as fast as that of normal adults and their breathing is more rapid too.  Newborn babies eat as many as twelve times a day because their stomachs are very small and they can only consume a small amount at a time.  Healthy babies normally double their birth weight in six months and triple it in their first year.

Not all of a baby's senses are fully developed when they are born.  Babies are born with poor eyesight yet they are still able to recognize their mothers.  They are able to focus the best at a distance of about twenty-five centimeters or eight inches past the bridge of their noses.  This distance is approximately equal to the distance between their mother's breast and their mother's eyes.  In addition to poor eyesight, babies don't much of a sense of taste at birth.  They do however have an excellent sense of smell at birth.  This helps them to recognize their mother's pheromones.  Babies are famous for their crying but they actually don't begin to produce tears until they are three to six weeks old.  A baby can recognize his mother's voice within seven days but it may take up to fourteen days for him to recognize his father's voice.

Another amazing fact about babies is that while in the womb, about ten weeks after conception, a baby may start favoring one hand over the other.  This same hand typically becomes their dominant hand after birth.  Babies are born with three hundred bones while adults have two hundred and six.  This is because some of babies' bones fuse together after birth as the baby grows.  The skull is one such bone since it needs to be able to accommodate the rapid growth of the brain after birth.  A baby's feet only have twenty-two partial bones at birth.  By the time the child reaches adulthood, he will have twenty-six complete bones.

Studies have shown that before babies develop their verbal communication skills, they are able to communicate physically.  They learn gestures from watching their parents and it's even possible for parents to teach their babies sign language as a means of communication before the baby can communicate verbally.  Babies also respond well to touch, strong primary colors like red and blue, and soothing, repetitive sounds.
